The maternity team at Tameside Hospital, Ashton Under Lyne provided care to a mother who suffered from paraplegia and type one diabetes. The birth was made more challenging as the baby’s growth was below the tenth centile (foetal growth restriction.)

The patient did not wish to transfer to a tertiary hospital and chose to give birth at our maternity unit. During her visit, she requested that I looked after her pregnancy and not to transfer her care to another hospital as she was the only person who drove in her family and if she got admitted – her husband would have to travel far to visit. Given her medical condition, it would have been difficult to get to the hospital in time from such a distance.

The patient had a successful natural birth at 37 weeks gestation. A healthy baby boy was delivered and is now one year old – he’s bought light into this beautiful world.

In the mother’s own words – “my doctor is my angel who helped my dream come true”
